The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
