A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of American actions.

Market Movement in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be no longer in control by the month's conclusion rose in the hours before President Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

One account, which joined the platform in December and made four bets, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.

It remains unclear. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Market Signals Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that participants assessed the probability of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by the end of the day and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity immediately prior to the social media post was made.

"That trade has all the characteristics of a bet based on inside information," stated an industry expert.

A handful of other individuals also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Grows

Elected officials are starting to take note.

A new rule introduced on recently seeks to ban federal workers from participating on prediction markets if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Event-driven betting sites have surged in popularity in the United States, with users able to predict everything from sports to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
